I'm so proud to share this pattern I created! I made it for a music festival but also used it during Brazilian carnival.

It is definitely a hat that will get people's attention, so I think it better fits some specific events. There are many occasions to use it though, and it is worth it! I received a few complements and even got a request to make a hat for a client, which is the purple/basketball one:

It took me around 6 hours to complete it. Free pattern is available below:

MATERIALS

Yarns: I used multicolored cotton yarn compatible with a 3.5mm hook for the spikes, and a much thinner cotton yarn to sew the spikes to the hat - you can even use sewing thread if you have it. Ideally both yarns will have similar colors to hide the sewing

Hook: Size 3.5mm

Stuffing: Recycled siliconed fiber

Baseball cap: any cap can be used as a base. For my own cap I thought of a light color so that the spikes are the focus of this project, but I also worked on a colored cap and it looked great, so it really depends on your personal preference!

ABBREVIATIONS - US TERMS

MR = Magic Ring

SC = Single Crochet

INC = Increase (2 SC in a single stitch)

SL ST = Slip Stitch

rnd = round

SPIKES (make 5):

Rnd 1: make 6 SC into MR. Close it with a SL ST (6)

Rnd 2: 1 INC, 5 SC (7)

Rnd 3: 7 SC (7)

Rnd 4: 1 INC, 6 SC (8)

Rnd 5: 8 SC (8)

Rnd 6: 1 INC, 7 SC (9)

Rnd 7: 9 SC (9)

(...)

You may notice there is a simple rule from one round to another. Keep making alternate rounds of 1 increase followed by single crochet stiches, and the next round being only single crochet stitches, until getting to a total of 19 stitches, which will happen at round 26.

(...)

Rnd 24: 1 INC, 16 SC (18)

Rnd 25: 18 SC

Rnd 26: 1 INC, 17 SC (19)

Rnd 27: 19 SC (19)

Rnd 28: 19 SL ST (19)

Fasten off and weave in the ends. No need to leave any thread for sewing - we will use a separate, thinner yarn for it.

Finished spike should have a base of ~4 cm diameter and height of ~17 cm.

5 spikes will fit an average hat size - you can make 6 as long as you measure the spike's base diameter and the space you have available for the hat you will use.

Sewing the spikes to the cap is not my favorite part, but I suggest trying the spikes on the cap to check how they will fit, and sew them close together - no more than 2 stitches apart from each other. I tied the beginning and the end of the sewing yarn and put a few drops of glue over it, hiding the knot inside the spike (but the glue is totally optional). Below you may find a few images to illustrate this process:

That should be it! The spiked mohawk crochet hat is ready to be used. I hope you enjoy it, and I would LOVE to see the finished project on social media, so please tag me on Instagram/Pinterest if you followed this pattern!

Do let me know of any feedback you may have while following this pattern, too :)

I started this project to share my crochet adventures, mostly with amigurumi and t-shirt yarn. I love experimenting with new crochet techniques and patterns!
